Technology has become cheaper as time has passed. What we would have paid thousands of dollars for a few years ago is today available as an addon, and this is true in any market, including the cell phone market. Here are three cell phone technologies that we used to marvel at a few decades ago and are today common even in first time buyer markets.

Color Screens:

When the first color screens came out, they literally painted the towns red with the news. Having a color screen mobile was a status symbol and definitely much more expensive than the dull and drab black and white screen phones. Some people were apprehensive of buying color mobile phones because they thought that the cost of replacing any part or repairing it would prove to be quite expensive. But with the increasing usage and demand of color screen mobile phones, they are here to stay.

WAP:

Before there was 3G, there was GPRS, and before there was GPRS, there was WAP. WAP was the granddaddy of all mobile Internet connections, it could be compared to the Doom or Quake of the gaming industry – because without the marginal success of WAP, GPRS would not have taken birth and we would not have the craze of apps and mobile computing today. WAP was right out of a typical geek’s dream, where they could connect online and browse websites while on the go. Remember, this was a time when even the most major of websites had not even thought about having mobile sites, one would simply have to get happy by reading the text version of the site.

Mobile Games:

If mobile computing and devices have yet to break through in a market, it is gaming. They have sauntered into shopping, education, entertainment, news, etc but they yet have to come up with a service or product that would make mobile gaming interesting and ‘in’. When mobile games were first launched, people had to buy them to play, and with color screens the market got a new buoyance. Of course, it all petered down when people found out that they did not have that much time to play a game while traveling, and today most of the games are available for free.

These are the top three technologies and services that have seen their downfall in the past decade.

Cell phone technology is constantly changing and it’s always amazing to see their various initiatives and latest technology that manufactures are constantly adding them to their latest range of handsets. I’m always questioning whether we need all this latest technology or image is being pushed upon us something we don’t actually need. I suppose we really have to sit back and try to understand how we personally use our cell phones to communicate. Many people simply use them for making voice calls and maybe text messages and this is how it’s been for such longtime. But, over the past number couple of years we have seen a major push in the smart phone area. There is a major push on for touchscreen technology making it easier to navigate around the various menus and access their vast amount of applications that are now becoming available for our cell phones.

With the push of content from many service providers and the easy access to news events and information is making this become a vital part of many people’s lives that they use on a daily basis. Smartphones have definitely changed her approach as to how we interact and the major manufacturers like Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, LG, Apple etc. are well aware of what many people are now looking for in terms of how we use our cell phones.

The evolution of cell phone is changing and the future will offer many different things for us consumers and users to make it easier to access the information and applications that we need.
With cell phones upgrading to the updated technology trends and becoming high-tech with a new feature added to their database every passing day, there are newer ways that people have found to improve their efficiency and ease at work through these electronic devices. This especially has become a commonplace nowadays as there are music players, built-in cameras, and various other features that have now become a component of our cell phones. Some of the technological advancements made available in cell phones these days, irrespective of their model and make are:

1. Memory cards: This enables the mobile user to increase the storage space of their mobiles to store more of contacts, songs, photos, and videos. As many cell phones do not provide the sufficient memory needs to suit the requirements of the user, these memory cards once installed in cell phones enhances the storage memory of mobile phones. Though not all cell phones provide a slot for these cards, but almost all the latest phones do. A memory card is indispensable if you are keen to use features like camera in your cell phones at regular basis.

          ]]>

2. Mobile broadband: A quick and easy broadband Internet connection available to you, no matter where you are is a great advantage, especially when it has been combined with the portability of mobile phones. HSDPA is the system on which mobile broadband are based, which makes available a speed of around 7.2Mbps, which is comparatively a lot more than a fixed broadband connection that provides a speed of 3Mbps.

3. Data Cables: Data cables are of great help for you to transfer your videos, photographs, and music from your phone to your PC or laptops. The transfer of data is quite easy and simple once the cell phone has been connected to the PC via data cables. After this, it is just a copy-paste procedure and nothing more. This is an efficient and quicker method of data transfer, without any hassles.

4. Bluetooth handsets: With several states issuing laws to restrict the cell phones use while driving or riding a vehicle, headsets are definitely a good escapade. Also, holding the headset on the shoulder and supporting it by head can be cumbersome and tedious. Bluetooth with its upgraded features is the greatest buzz among the cell phone users. They are small, sleek and to top it all, wireless. As they rely on the Bluetooth technology, there is nothing that the mobile users have to bother about regarding untangling with innumerable wires and creating nuisance.

As there is so much on offer in cell phones, they have become more of a trend among people than a necessity, it not only connects you to your loved ones at all time of day and night, but are a great blessing when stuck in remote areas with a flat tire or any such emergency. Also, the budget isn’t a problem as their price range varies a great deal. So, what’s stopping you now, go and grab one for yourself today!

Whenever a manufacture releases a new cell phone or Smartphone there are always some bugs that are discovered latter that will require fixing. Manufactures always release software revisions to their phones that update the phone’s firmware (chip).

Over the life of the cell phone there will be many revisions that either fixes issues that consumers complain about or make enhancements to the phone.

This firmware update can be done in two ways; (1) You can take your phone to the nearest Wireless Carrier Store and have them do it for you or (2) You can do it yourself. This article will give you step-by-step instructions how to go about performing the cell phone upgrade yourself.

Things you’ll need:

PC
Cell phone USB cable
Manufacture’s software update tool and drivers

Step1:

Check the software revision that your cell phone is currently using. This can usually be found in the ‘Settings and Tools’ menu of your phone.

Step2:

Visit the cell phone manufacture’s website and navigate to the Support section of the site. Some manufacture’s sites may require you to register your cell phone first. Check to see if a new revision is available for your cell phone and what bugs it fixes.

Step3:

In the ‘Support” section download the USB drivers for your phone. These drivers enable your PC to recognize you cell phone.

Step4:

Download the ‘software upgrade tool’ for the phone your own. The software upgrade tool may also be used for many different models. You will need to confirm the software will support your model and wireless carrier you are using.

Step5:

Install the USB driver and upgrade tool onto your PC by following the on-screen setup instructions.

Step6:

Launch the upgrade tool application and connect your cell phone to your PC’s USB port via the USB cable. READ THE MANUFACTURE’S INFORMATION ON THE PRECAUTIONS YOU MUST FOLLOW.

Step7:

If you have any questions or concerns, you can post a question on the manufacture’s website Forum. This is where people exchange ideas and questions about their phones. Also see ‘References’ below for a well know Cell Phone Forum where you can receive help.

Not to be left out of the malicious attacker’s hit lists; cell phones (Apple’s® iPhone, RIM’s® Blackberry range etc) and other embedded systems are also prone to malware. Target specific custom crafted viruses and worms can create untold damage to these systems and their users or both. Because these systems can reach so far and wide the problem is becoming insidious and the spread of these types of malware can often be more akin to that of wildfire.

Unlimited Target Opportunities

If only because of the usage patterns of typical mobile and embedded systems are subjected to it is not hard to see how rapidly these types of malware can proliferate. For example every time you use your cell phone to contact another cell phone or telephony enabled VoIP system the opportunity for malware to invade exists.

With the average cell phone user making or receiving on average 12 calls per day the numbers take on staggering proportions very quickly. By applying the six degrees of separation to this mode of malware infection we that the potential exists for this type of malware to become globally distributed in a matter of hours not days as with most other types of computer malware.

Attacker Motivations

Apart from free phone calls what can the perpetrators of this malware possibly hope to gain? This is the first question to answer in order to be able to find the means by which they can be stopped.

Storage Capacity

Not only have the data storage capacities of the average cell phone have been sky-rocketing in recent times, so too has the variety of data types users elect to store on this class of devices.

Data storage rule number one states that the greater the storage capacity the faster you will fill it. So it is; that today we now store all sorts of user created information on our cell phones including photos, contact lists, personal details, banking credentials and other personally identifiable electronic information along with a plethora of other documents and communications information.

To fuel this need manufacturers are producing cell phones and other embedded systems with ever more copious quantities of internal and removable storage capabilities.

Functionality and Firmware Upgrades

The feature sets of cell phones and other embedded systems are delivered in part courtesy of the devices hardware capabilities and in part courtesy of the devices internal software commonly referred to as its firmware. Incorporation of newly developed features is often implemented in the firmware long before being incorporated as dedicated hardware functionality.

Today most new embedded systems have the capacity for user initiated field implemented firmware upgrades. Thus the code that runs your embedded systems can be modified “on-the-fly” as it were to deliver more functionality. This is no doubt a great marketing feature but one with a hidden and very malevolent underside.

Corruption of the new software (firmware upgrade) is; as with all software, very possible. You may have some unpredicted event interfering with the download and upgrade installation process. All manner of events may conspire to cause the installation to fail.

As annoying as this may seem, it is in fact not much of a problem since rectification of your failed firmware upgrade simply means that you must repeat the procedure, that is you reinstall until you eventually succeed. Corruption due to malware infection on the other hand is no laughing matter, particularly if that malware is a root kit or one that resides in RAM.

Publicly Accessible Networks

The heart of the problem however; is that these firmware upgrades are too often performed over publicly accessible networks and therein resides the danger. Most publicly accessible networks have

zero security and even the GSM mobiles encryption algorithm has; for quite some time now, been very easy to crack using rainbow tables and many other tools freely accessible via the Internet.

Detecting Cell Phone Malware Presence

Until now; the main factor contributing to the very low degree of resilience to attack commonly exhibited by cell phones and other embedded systems has been the serious lack of mechanisms capable of detecting malware in real time on this class of computing systems. Fortunately; and not before time, a team from the Carnegie Mellon University’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department have succeeded in creating a small and compact program that can detect remote malicious attacks, such as worms and viruses.

The Carnegie Mellon University’s software is reported to work with practically all cell phones and most other embedded systems such as those found in automobiles and many appliances. Through the use of a special mechanism that can verify the code running on any given remotely embedded system this new cyber-cop can root out the worst offenders by alerting users that their cell phone or car computer has been invaded by an unwanted rogue virus.

Theoretically, every piece of malware can be detected because its presence and activity alters instance specific parameters of the device that it has invaded. Simple viruses can be detected through their altered memory contents while characteristics typical of worms such as exorbitant hard drive storage capacity consumption and usage patterns can be used in their detection.

“Stealth” Cell Phone Malware

More advanced viruses that exhibit “stealth” capabilities may attempt to “hide” themselves from the host device. Yet; even this type of “stealthy” malware can still be detected because in order to exert their “hiding” capability they will consume processing time. The result is that they will slow down the detection system’s code verification processes and procedures to such an extent that this alone will indicate their presence.

It is important to note that in most instances this slow-down is not readily discernable to mere humans. However; with cell phone and embedded systems CPUs operating at many hundreds of millions of cycles per second this slowdown sticks out like a dogs b—s. Some viruses even hog the compromised system’s physical memory to such an extent that the compromised system’s performance is slowed to such an extent that even we humans cannot fail to notice.

Cell Phone “Key Logger” Malware

Various flavors of “key logger” malware have long had the capacity to faithfully record every keystroke and mouse click performed by a user. Passwords, account credentials, personal information, financial records, network authorization codes, keys and hashes are all prone to compromise via some form of “key logger” attack.

Zombie Cell Phones

Some of the newer generations of malware are even capable of turning the infected device into a “zombie” capable of executing instructions on demand or carrying out predefined instructions to obtain future “orders” from so-called “bot-masters” to snatch passwords and other personally identifiable information, run online scams and even participate in denial of service attacks.

Cell Phone “Dialer” Malware

Other more insidious malware commonly classified as “dialer” malware have the capacity to direct those systems that they have invaded to dial specific premium-rate numbers (porno etc.) and thereby run up a huge and exorbitant phone bills for which their unsuspecting victims are liable.

What makes much dialer malware so great a threat is their capability to do so “silently”. That is the malware takes great care to ensure that connection details, billing charges and the actual contents of the premium rate calls are not displayed or made known to the user in any way at the time the dialer executed its dial up functionality. Generally this category of malware also tends to tidy up after itself which usually means all traces including logs are automatically deleted at random, at shut-down time, at boot-up time or at some other predefined characteristic.

One of this later group exhibit an even more sophisticated behavior in that the malware passes information to its controller regarding the victim’s credit card daily limits or the amount of the prepaid call value remaining on the victim’s SIM card. In this way the malware can use up to a certain amount of credit as specified by its controller without drawing the undue attention of the victim.

Anyway way you look at it the end result is the same. The victim gets billed with the costs of running up the high phone bill charges and phone companies tend not to care whether if an abnormally high phone bill was due to the customer being an unwitting victim of an embedded computer or cell phone malware attack or not.

Conclusions

No doubt about it; the cyber wars arms race continues unabated as one area is dampened the villains find newer and more novel angles to exploit. There can be very little doubt that some of these individuals are very creative and lateral thinking is something that they have adopted. Thus those holding up the fight for the “goodies” must think laterally and proactively create a preventative cure rather than reactively dance to the malware authors’ dance.

Time and time again throughout history we have seen technologies used for “good” and “bad” in ways that the creators’ of those technologies never imagined nor could envision. We all see the world from a different perspective but can empathetically understand the perspective of others. This is what makes us human and makes the “perversion” if you like, of ideas and technologies not just possible but probable.

Most people are of the opinion that receiving a call from an unknown cell phone number is extremely annoying. There is a level of doubt about answering a call from an unknown number and many people will choose to leave the call in the hope that more information is provided. This can be prevented by using a cell phone lookup service that will provide the information you need and will allow you to feel confident in contacting the person.

There are a multitude of reasons why a number may not be known when it appears on your cell phone but a phone number search will bring back the relevant information you need. When you place the unknown number into the lookup reverse search facility, you should receive the name and area of the caller. Most sites will provide the details of the name and location of the caller and some phone lookup sites will even offer provider and connection information.

If you are experiencing unsolicited cell phone calls, knowing the name and location can be a great piece of information to have. Cell phones make it very easy to stay in touch with people all over the world, which has to be seen as a positive.

That said, it should be noted that many people experience more unwanted calls on their cell phone as opposed to their home phone, which means the lreverse cell phone lookup is perfect for these people. Writing the number that appears on the cell phone screen provides you with everything you need to undertake a phone number search.

Sometimes a friend may be using someone else’s phone or perhaps they have bought a new cell phone but haven’t given you the new number. Using the reverse phone lookup system to check the number will get you up to speed quickly. An unknown number is not necessarily a reason to panic but you should always try to be safe.

Carrying out a lookup reverse search to investigate the phone number calling a cell phone is ideal for many people, including parents. Safety is always important when it comes to children, which is why most parents give their child a cell phone but parents have a right to know who is calling their child.

Having awareness of who is calling the cell phone of your loved ones is a simple task and the lookup phone reverse search facilities can bring peace of mind in an instant.ers two installations for the price of one.}

Presume you’re sauntering down the lane and you see that bizarre signboard which kindles your thirst to shoot. But then you realize that your sturdy SLR isn’t with you (be practical, who carries that heavy piece 24?7).

Well, this is exactly where your cell phone comes in handy. Nowadays, the pocket sized all-so solid mobile phone cameras have driven the point-and-shoot ones to near extinction (well, almost). We take a closer look on some tips that can help you get the best out of your cell phone camera.

CHOOSING THE SUBJECT

different present day phones offer megapixel counts above 5, but that doesn’t mean they are apt for every shooting scenario. For instance, if you are employing your phone to shoot a rock concert, more often than not you’d merely get dark blurry images. The fact is, camera phones are ideal for shooting still objects in well-lit scenarios, preferably in broad daylight.

Even if your phone offers Xenon or LED flash, night photography shouldn’t be its cup of tea.

So what is the remedy? Well, peek into your camera’s settings. You will find a number of scene modes (even with the most basic VGA ones) such as ‘night landscape’, ‘portrait’, ‘sports’, ‘fireworks’, etc. These presets automatically choose the ideal shooting options for the given scenario. Experiment with each and you are sure to see your photographs improve drastically. In the newer breed of Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot phones (and in some of the Samsung phones too, though features on Samsung are country-specific most of the time), you will come across an option called Slow Sync Flash. Don’t hesitate to use it. Basically, Slow Sync tells the camera to shoot with a slightly longer exposure time thereby giving the Flash an enhanced duration of exposure.

Bluntly put, it helps to lessen the dark.

KEEP IT Stable

If you are getting blurry images with your phone, don’t fret on account of you are not alone. Most of the phones’ cameras have slow shutter speeds with no feature to vary the exposure settings. The advantageous thing one can do is to hold the phone as safe as possible, preferably with both hands while shooting. It is not confusing but does require some practice.

KNOW THE ‘CLICK’

Another passport to getting sharp photos is to know the camera’s shutter release. In no problem terms, how long does it take for the camera to pull off the task after you press the shoot button? If there is a lag, you will need to account for that. And if the shutter release is on a touch screen (such as on the Apple iPhone), the shutter presumably gets tripped after you lift your finger, not when you press down. Either way, you will need to hold the camera steady while the picture is in reality being exposed. This does not mean that you need to get a tripod for your phone. Just keep your hands still (or at least as still as possible).

OPTIMIZING THE CAMERA SETTINGS

Most camera phones today provide a few settings that you can use to optimize your exposures. All the standard rules and terms from digital cameras are pertinent. If there is an ISO setting, take it off Auto. When you are outdoors in daylight, you should set the ISO to its lowest grade to minimize the digital noise in your picture (which can be pretty grainy with a camera phone). In lower light settings, bump the ISO up as high as it will go (which notably should be at least 400 in a decent phone).

Likewise, the phone may provide you some control over the JPEG image quality. Always go for the lowest compression/biggest quality option available. After all, camera phone pictures are already compact enough to begin with – do not compound the quandary with needless photo-damaging compression.

If you are the owner of handsets with cracking optical zoom ratings (such as Sony Ericsson C903, Samsung Pixon or the newly released Nokia N8), use the zoom to the fullest. You will find zooming in at 3x or 4x on the object a better option as compared to yourself moving forward. However, be warned: this is fruitful with OPTICAL zoom only. If your phone is one of the 20x DIGITAL zoom types, bother not. Digital zoom won’t be helpful much and is at greatest used sparingly.

GET THE Bona fide TOOLS

Your photo editing software – whether it is Adobe Photoshop Elements, Corel Photo-Paint or even something like Google’s free Picasaweb – can help improve most of your camera phone photos. If you have an Android device or an iPhone, you are in great hands as tupbeathere are large applications and softwares available that put most of the image editors to shame. For iPhone users, the plethora of options from the Apple stable includes Free Photo Filters, SP Photo Fix Lite, Photobox and iRetouch Lite. If you are an Android user, well, the galaxy is filled with apps for you. Check out Picsay and FxCamera. Both of them, along with multitudinous other apps, are freely available from the www
FINAL WORD

When cameras where first assimilated into mobile phones, they were something of a gimmick, providing very low resolution and sad quality images. Today, cameras are an indispensable piece of the phone and the features just keep going higher. Even though your phone will stand nowhere in comparison to a mainstream camera, with some effort and implementation of the above said tips, you are sure to get great results. Happy shooting! respectable
